Standard Door Sizes in the UK
The standard UK internal door is 1981 x 762 mm (6'6" x 2'6") and 35 mm thick. Scotland and many new builds use metric doors instead, 2040 mm high and 40 mm thick. Front doors are usually 1981 x 762, 1981 x 838 or 2032 x 813 mm. We checked the ranges of four UK door makers (JB Kind, Deanta, LPD and XL Joinery) in October 2026, and drew the common sizes to scale next to an adult.
All drawn at the same scale from the front. The figure is 1.75 m tall.
Internal door sizes
There are two sets of standard sizes. Imperial doors are 1981 mm high; metric doors are 2040 mm high, with widths from British Standard BS 4787. A ★ marks the sizes all four makers we checked offer.
Imperial, 35 mm thick
England and Wales, most homes- ★ 1981 x 457 mm (6'6" x 1'6")
- ★ 1981 x 533 mm (6'6" x 1'9")
- ★ 1981 x 610 mm (6'6" x 2'0")
- ★ 1981 x 686 mm (6'6" x 2'3")
- 1981 x 711 mm (6'6" x 2'4")
- ★ 1981 x 762 mm (6'6" x 2'6")
- 1981 x 813 mm (6'6" x 2'8")
- ★ 1981 x 838 mm (6'6" x 2'9")
- 1981 x 864 mm (6'6" x 2'10")
- 1981 x 914 mm (6'6" x 3'0")
All four make 457, 533, 610, 686, 762 and 838 mm widths. Some older homes have taller 2032 x 813 mm (6'8" x 2'8") doors, which LPD and XL Joinery still make.
Metric, 40 mm thick
Scotland and many new builds- 2040 x 426 mm
- 2040 x 526 mm
- ★ 2040 x 626 mm
- ★ 2040 x 726 mm
- ★ 2040 x 826 mm
- 2040 x 926 mm
All four make 626, 726 and 826 mm widths. The 426 mm size is Deanta's own; the rest come from BS 4787.
| Width | Feet and inches | Usually for |
|---|---|---|
| 457 and 533 mm | 1'6" and 1'9" | Cupboards and wardrobes |
| 610 and 686 mm | 2'0" and 2'3" | Where wall space is tight |
| 762 mm | 2'6" | Most rooms: the standard internal door |
| 838 mm | 2'9" | Wider openings and easier access |
How to measure for a new door
- 1
Measure the old door
Measure the door itself, not the frame: width, height and thickness. If it's a standard size, buy the same again.
- 2
No door? Measure inside the frame
Take off a 2 to 4 mm gap at the top and each side, and leave up to 8 mm at the floor (Deanta's guidance). Measure in three places and use the smallest.
- 3
Check the frame depth
Door linings come 108 or 133 mm wide to suit the wall. The lining should be as wide as the wall is thick, plaster included.
- 4
Trim a bigger door if you must
Many internal doors can be trimmed by up to about 30 mm, depending on the design. Fire doors have their own limits, so check before you cut.
What size is my door?
Measure the old door itself, not the frame, and enter its width and height.
We'll match it to the standard sizes.
Door thickness
| Door | Thickness |
|---|---|
| Imperial internal door | 35 mm |
| Metric internal door | 40 mm |
| FD30 fire door | 44 mm |
| External timber door | 44 mm |
| Composite front door (Rockdoor) | 50 mm |
| FD60 fire door | 54 mm |
A fire door also needs a frame, seals and hinges that match its certificate, so it isn't a straight swap for an ordinary door.
Front and back door sizes
Standard external doors come in three sizes, all 44 mm thick. JB Kind makes its external frame kits for exactly these three. The frame adds about 80 mm to the height and width:
| Door | Feet and inches | With frame |
|---|---|---|
| 1981 x 762 mm | 6'6" x 2'6" | 2,062 x 844 mm |
| 1981 x 838 mm | 6'6" x 2'9" | 2,062 x 920 mm |
| 2032 x 813 mm | 6'8" x 2'8" | 2,113 x 895 mm |
Composite front doors are usually made to measure as a door set, with the frame included, so the fitter measures the opening rather than the old door. Rockdoor, for example, makes its doors up to 908 x 2,098 mm, 50 mm thick. See our composite door cost guide for prices.
For a new home, Approved Document M asks for a front door with a clear opening of at least 775 mm, or 850 mm where planning asks for an accessible home.
Fire door sizes
Fire doors come in the same widths and heights as ordinary doors, but thicker: 44 mm for FD30 (30 minutes) and 54 mm for FD60. Deanta, LPD and JB Kind all make FD30 doors in the common imperial and metric sizes.
Where you need one, from Approved Document B:
- Three-storey houses and loft conversions: doors onto the stairs need to be at least FD20. In practice you'll buy FD30, because makers in the industry's fire door scheme no longer sell FD20 without seals.
- Between a house and an integral garage: FD30 with a self-closer.
- Flat front doors: FD30 with a self-closer. Doors onto a flat's protected hall need FD20.
A 44 mm door only works as a fire door if it's certified and hung in a frame, with seals and hardware, that match its certificate. Cutting it down more than the maker allows voids the certificate.
Door widths for wheelchair access
Part M measures the clear opening: from the face of the open door to the frame, not the door itself. A standard 826 mm leaf counts as 775 mm clear. Inside a new home, the opening needed depends on the corridor outside it:
| Door clear opening (mm) | Corridor width (mm) |
|---|---|
| 750 or wider | 900 (approached head on) |
| 750 | 1,200 (not head on) |
| 775 | 1,050 (not head on) |
| 800 | 900 (not head on) |
From Tables 1.1 and 2.1 of Approved Document M, Volume 1 (England). Wheelchair-user homes need 850 mm at every door.
Garage door sizes
Hörmann makes up-and-over doors from 6'6" (1,981 mm) to 14'0" (4,267 mm) wide in 6 inch steps, in two standard heights: 6'6" (1,981 mm) and 7'0" (2,134 mm). Garador's single doors come in nominal widths from 1,984 to 3,049 mm and heights from 1,830 to 2,286 mm. The two makers' sizes don't quite line up: Garador's 7 ft high door is 2,136 mm. You lose some width to the gear: Garador puts the drive-through gap on its retractable doors at 105 mm less than the opening. See garage door costs.
Bifold and French door sizes
Most bifolds are made to measure, but some come in set sizes. LPD's AluVu range, for example, is 2090 or 2128 mm high:
| Size | Overall width | Doors |
|---|---|---|
| 6ft | 1,790 mm | 3 doors |
| 8ft | 2,390 mm | 3 doors |
| 10ft | 2,990 mm | 3 doors |
| 12ft | 3,590 mm | 3 or 4 doors |
| 14ft | 4,190 mm | 4 or 5 doors |
Its French doors are 1,190, 1,500 and 1,800 mm wide. For prices, see our bifold door cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard internal door size in the UK?+
1981 x 762 mm (6'6" x 2'6"), 35 mm thick. JB Kind calls it the most common internal door in England and Wales. In Scotland and many new builds, doors are metric: 2040 mm high and 40 mm thick, most often 726 or 826 mm wide.
What is the standard front door size in the UK?+
The standard external door sizes are 1981 x 762, 1981 x 838 and 2032 x 813 mm, all 44 mm thick. The frame for a 1981 x 762 mm door measures about 2,062 x 844 mm overall. Composite doors are usually made to measure instead.
Are doors 2 metres tall?+
Not quite. Imperial doors are 1981 mm (6'6") tall and metric doors 2040 mm. Older homes sometimes have 2032 mm (6'8") doors. We found no minimum door height for homes in the building regulations guidance.
Can a door be 600 mm wide?+
The nearest standard sizes are 610 mm (2'0") in imperial, made by all four makers we checked, and 626 mm in metric. Narrower doors of 457 and 533 mm are made for cupboards.
What size opening do I need for a 762 mm door?+
By our working, about 821 to 830 mm between the outside faces of the lining. That's the door, a 2 to 4 mm gap each side and a lining about 27.5 to 30 mm thick each side. Leave a few millimetres more to pack the lining straight.
What width door do I need for a wheelchair?+
Approved Document M asks for a clear opening of at least 775 mm at the front door of a new home, or 850 mm in an accessible home. A standard 826 mm door leaf counts as 775 mm clear. Inside, the width needed depends on the corridor: an 800 mm opening suits a 900 mm corridor.
How thick is a fire door?+
An FD30 fire door is 44 mm thick and an FD60 is 54 mm. Thickness alone doesn't make a fire door: it has to be certified and hung in a frame, with seals and hardware, that match its certificate.
What's the difference between imperial and metric doors?+
Imperial doors are 1981 mm high and 35 mm thick, with widths based on feet and inches. Metric doors are 2040 mm high and 40 mm thick, with widths of 526 to 926 mm in 100 mm steps. They aren't interchangeable, so match the size of the door you're replacing.
