How this calculator works

Our kitchen cost calculator estimates the total price of a new kitchen based on your room layout, quality level, and worktop choice. You select from galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, or island layouts, pick a budget, mid-range, or premium specification, and choose your worktop material. The tool then prices up units, worktops, appliances, plumbing, electrics, tiling, and fitting labour separately.

Costs are adjusted for your UK region, reflecting the difference in trade rates between areas like London, the South East, and the rest of the country. The calculator also accounts for common extras such as splashbacks, new flooring, plastering, and decoration, so you get a more complete picture of the total spend rather than just the kitchen units.

These estimates reflect typical 2026 pricing from UK kitchen suppliers and fitters. Your actual cost will depend on the specific products you choose, the condition of your existing kitchen, and whether any structural changes are needed. Always get detailed, itemised quotes from at least three kitchen fitters before making a decision.

Common questions

How much does a new kitchen cost in the UK in 2026?

A new kitchen costs between £3,000 and £35,000 in 2026, depending on size, quality, and worktop material. A typical mid-range L-shaped kitchen with laminate worktops and standard appliances costs £8,000 to £14,000 fully fitted. Premium kitchens with quartz worktops and high-end appliances can exceed £25,000.

How long does it take to fit a new kitchen?

A small galley kitchen takes 1 to 2 weeks to fit, while a larger kitchen with an island typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. This covers demolition, plumbing, electrics, fitting, tiling, and decoration. Add extra time if you are having the walls re-plastered or the floor replaced.

Is it cheaper to buy a kitchen from IKEA or Howdens?

IKEA kitchens are generally 20-30% cheaper than Howdens for the units themselves. However, Howdens is trade-only and includes design and planning support through your fitter. Many kitchen fitters prefer working with Howdens because the units are sturdier and easier to install. The total fitted cost can be similar once labour is factored in.

What is the best worktop material for the money?

Laminate worktops offer the best value at £20 to £40 per linear metre, with modern designs that convincingly mimic stone and wood. Quartz (£80 to £150 per metre) is the most popular upgrade - it is extremely durable, low-maintenance, and looks premium. Solid wood is a good middle ground at £40 to £80 per metre but needs regular oiling.
