Shower Tray Sizes
The sizes you'll find everywhere are 760, 800 and 900 mm squares, 800 and 900 mm quadrants, and 1000 x 800, 1200 x 800, 1200 x 900, 1400 x 800 and 1700 x 800 mm rectangles. We checked the stone resin ranges of four big UK makers (Mira, MX, Coram and Merlyn) in October 2026, and all four make those sizes. Below, each shape is drawn to scale with an adult standing in it.
Seen from above, all at the same scale, with the walls along the top and left. The figure's shoulders are 46 cm across, and the circle is a 90 mm waste.

Pentagon
2 sizes- 900 mm

Which size do you need?
| Space | Tray size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small en-suite or cloakroom | 800 mm quadrant or 760 to 800 mm square | A quadrant's curved front leaves more room to get in and out. |
| Most bathrooms | 900 mm square or quadrant, or 1200 x 800 mm | Enough room to move without the shower taking over the room. |
| Walk-in shower | 1400 x 900 mm or longer | A longer tray keeps water inside the screen without a door. |
| Replacing a bath | 1700 x 700 or 1700 x 800 mm | Fits the space and often the old waste position too. |
For an accessible bathroom, Approved Document M asks for a level-access shower of at least 1200 x 1200 mm in a wheelchair-accessible home (or 1000 x 1200 mm where removing the bath could widen it), built as a wet room. Its drawings for an accessible, adaptable home show a 1000 x 1000 mm shower.
How to measure for a shower tray
- 1
Measure wall to wall
Measure the space at floor level and again higher up the wall. Walls are rarely square, so use the smaller figure.
- 2
Allow for the enclosure
Enclosures are made to match tray sizes. Pick the tray and buy the enclosure or screen in the same size.
- 3
Check the door
A hinged or pivot door needs room to swing out past the toilet and basin. Sliding, bifold and walk-in screens need less.
- 4
Find the waste
Note where the waste pipe can run. If it can't go under the floor, the tray may need a riser kit, which adds height.
Tray heights, risers and wastes
Low-profile stone resin trays are 25 to 50 mm high. Where the waste trap can't sit in the floor, such as on a concrete floor, a riser kit lifts the tray. Coram's 85 mm kit puts the rim at 135 mm.
Stone resin trays use a 90 mm waste. The makers rate theirs at 27 to 40 litres a minute, and Merlyn warns that high-powered showers can go over that. If you have a power shower or a pump, check its flow rate against the tray's waste.
What a shower tray costs
A low-profile stone resin tray costs about £100 to £350, and turning a bath into a walk-in shower usually costs £1,500 to £3,500 with fitting and tiling. See our walk-in shower cost guide for the full breakdown, or price a whole bathroom.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common shower tray size?+
There isn't one single standard, but some sizes are made by every big maker. Of the four UK makers we checked (Mira, MX, Coram and Merlyn), all four make 760, 800 and 900 mm squares, 800 and 900 mm quadrants, and 1000 x 800, 1200 x 800, 1200 x 900, 1400 x 800 and 1700 x 800 mm rectangles.
What is the smallest shower tray size?+
The smallest size all four makers offer is a 760 mm square, which leaves about 15 cm either side of an adult's shoulders. MX also makes a 700 mm square. For a small en-suite, an 800 mm quadrant is often easier to fit because the curved front leaves more floor space.
Is a 760 mm shower tray big enough?+
It works, but it's snug. An adult's shoulders are about 46 cm across, so a 760 mm tray leaves about 15 cm each side and less room to wash your hair. A 900 mm tray gives about 22 cm each side.
What size shower tray replaces a bath?+
A 1700 x 700 mm tray fits where a standard 1700 x 700 mm bath was. Mira, MX and Merlyn all make one, and 1700 x 800 mm trays are common too if the space allows.
How high is a shower tray?+
Low-profile stone resin trays are 25 to 50 mm high. With a riser kit, which lifts the tray to make room for the waste trap underneath, the rim sits at about 135 mm on Coram's trays.
What size shower tray do I need for a walk-in shower?+
Most walk-in screens sit on a tray at least 1200 mm long, and 1400 x 900 mm or longer gives room to stand away from the splash. MX makes walk-in trays from 1300 x 800 to 1700 x 800 mm with a drying area at one end.
Do shower enclosures come in the same sizes as trays?+
Yes. Enclosures and screens are sold to match tray sizes, so choose the tray first and buy the enclosure in the same size. Check the enclosure's door type too: a hinged or pivot door needs room to swing out, while sliding and bifold doors need less.
