Bath Sizes
The standard UK bath is 1700 x 700 mm. Carron makes that size in 16 of its ranges. Smaller baths start at 1400 mm long, large ones are 1800 x 800 mm, and freestanding baths run to 1900 mm. We went through Carron's 66 baths and other makers' data sheets in October 2026.

Bath sizes by type
Sizes are length x width in millimetres, from Carron's current range. Other makers use the same standard sizes, with a few in between.
Single-ended (taps at one end)
- 1400 x 700 mm
- 1500 x 700 mm
- 1600 x 700 mm
- 1650 x 700 mm
- 1700 x 700 mm
- 1700 x 750 mm
- 1700 x 800 mm
- 1750 x 750 mm
- 1800 x 800 mm
- 1900 x 900 mm
The usual fitted bath. 1700 x 700 mm is the standard size.
Double-ended (taps in the middle)
- 1600 x 700 mm
- 1700 x 700 mm
- 1700 x 750 mm
- 1700 x 800 mm
- 1800 x 800 mm
- 1800 x 900 mm
- 1900 x 900 mm
Both ends slope, so two people can sit back. Usually 1700 mm or longer.
Shower bath (wider at the tap end)
- 1500 x 700 to 850 mm
- 1600 x 700 to 850 mm
- 1700 x 700 to 850 mm
- 1700 x 750 to 900 mm
- 1800 x 750 to 900 mm
A P or L shape gives more room to stand at the shower end. Widths are at the tap end.
Corner
- 1200 x 1200 mm
- 1300 x 1300 mm
- 1500 x 1500 mm
- 1550 x 950 mm
- 1700 x 1000 mm
Square or offset baths that fit across a corner.
Freestanding
- 1550 x 850 mm
- 1700 x 750 mm
- 1750 x 800 mm
- 1800 x 900 mm
- 1900 x 1000 mm
Taller and usually longer than fitted baths, and they need space all round.
Height, depth and how much water a bath holds
| Measurement | Figure |
|---|---|
| Height, fitted 700 mm wide bath with panel | 515 mm |
| Height, fitted bath 750 mm or wider | 540 mm |
| Height, freestanding bath | 600 to 655 mm |
| Height, cast iron roll-top | about 705 mm |
| Water to the overflow, 1700 x 700 mm | 145 to 228 litres |
| Water to the overflow, 1800 x 800 mm | 210 to 300 litres |
| Weight, acrylic 1700 x 700 mm | about 19 kg |
| Weight, steel 1700 x 700 mm | about 40 kg |
| Weight, cast iron roll-top | about 182 kg |
Two baths of the same size can hold very different amounts. Across Carron's 1700 x 700 mm baths the capacity runs from 145 to 228 litres, because of the shape and depth inside. A bath with a smaller capacity costs less to fill with hot water.
Weight matters most with cast iron. A 182 kg roll-top holding 144 litres of water with an adult in it comes to over 400 kg, so get a builder to check the joists before fitting one upstairs.
Choosing the right size
- Replacing a bath: measure the old one and the space between the walls. Most spaces were built for a 1700 x 700 mm bath, so the same size usually drops straight in.
- Small bathroom: a 1500 or 1600 mm bath frees up floor space, or a shower bath gives you a usable shower without a separate enclosure.
- Tall people: a 1800 mm bath or a double-ended bath, where both ends slope, gives more room to lie back.
- Swapping for a shower: a 1700 x 700 mm shower tray fits where a standard bath was. See our shower tray sizes guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard bath size in the UK?+
1700 x 700 mm. Carron, one of the biggest UK bath makers, makes that size in 16 of its ranges, and Approved Document M, the building regulations guidance on access, uses 1700 x 700 mm as its bath size.
What is the smallest bath you can buy?+
Fitted baths start at about 1400 x 700 mm, with 1500 and 1600 mm lengths also common. For a very small bathroom, a shower over a 1500 mm bath or a shower tray may be a better fit.
How tall is a bath?+
A fitted 700 mm wide bath with its panel is about 515 mm high, and wider baths about 540 mm. Freestanding baths are taller, about 600 to 655 mm, and a cast iron roll-top can be over 700 mm.
How many litres does a bath hold?+
A standard 1700 x 700 mm bath holds about 145 to 228 litres filled to the overflow, depending on its shape. An 1800 x 800 mm bath holds about 210 to 300 litres. Most people fill a bath well below the overflow.
How heavy is a bath?+
An acrylic 1700 x 700 mm bath weighs about 19 kg and a steel one about 40 kg. A cast iron roll-top can weigh 182 kg empty, so with water and someone in it the total can pass 400 kg. Get the floor checked before fitting one upstairs.
What size is a shower bath?+
Shower baths are usually 1500 to 1800 mm long and widen at the tap end, to about 800 to 900 mm, so you have room to stand under the shower.
Will a 1700 mm bath fit a 1700 mm space?+
Usually, because baths are made to fit standard spaces between walls. Measure at a few heights, as walls are rarely straight, and check the bath's exact length on the maker's drawing. Some baths made for these spaces are slightly shorter, such as 1675 mm, to make fitting easier.
