What a skip costs in 2026

Across the 76 skip firms with a price for an 8 yard builder's skip, the average (median) is £322 including VAT. Half charge less and half charge more. The typical range (the middle 50% of prices) is £281 to £360. That's for a skip on your drive, with delivery, collection and a normal load included.

Most skip firms (75%) quote a starting price, because the final figure depends on your postcode. We count those alongside fixed prices, as both are what firms advertise. The 19 firms with a fixed price charge an average of £312, and the 57 quoting a starting price start at £330 on average.

Many firms don't say whether VAT is included, so we counted their price as including VAT. Among the 47 that do say, the average price is £330.

Permits and extras

A skip on the road needs a council permit. The 22 firms that list what they charge to arrange one add an average of £60, with a typical range of £41 to £109, because each council sets its own fee. Extra days, heavy waste and restricted items such as mattresses can add to the bill too.

What this means if you're hiring a skip

  • About £322 is a fair price for an 8 yard skip. Above about £360, you're paying more than three in four firms charge.
  • Expect the price to change once you give your postcode, because most firms quote a starting price.
  • Put the skip on your drive if it fits. It saves the permit charge.
  • Get at least three quotes, and check what each includes: the hire period, weight limits and VAT.
  • Check the firm is a registered waste carrier on the Environment Agency register.

How we collected and checked the prices

On 29 October 2026 we ran 819 searches for skip hire across 250 towns and cities in ten regions of Great Britain. From 7,283 search results we found 458 skip firms. We left out cost guides, directories, lead-generation services and brokers that pass your order to another firm, and used only prices from the firms themselves. Where one business trades under several near-identical names, we counted it once.

The standard job is an 8 yard skip of mixed household or building waste on a private drive. Each price was read and checked against its source, and anything that didn't pass was reviewed again. Then a separate checker re-read every 8 yard price from scratch, without seeing the first reading: 73 of 76 matched, and a third check of the other 3 led to 2 corrections.

Each firm counts once. The average price we give is the median: the middle price when all the firms' prices are lined up, so a few very high or low prices can't skew it. These are advertised prices, which aren't always what people pay. More detail is on our methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does skip hire cost in 2026?

How much is a skip permit?
Councils set their own fees. Skip firms that list the charge add £60 on average to arrange a permit for a skip on the road, with a typical range of £41 to £109. A skip on your own drive doesn't need one.
Where is skip hire most expensive?

Why do skip firms quote a starting price?
The price depends on how far the skip travels and local tipping costs, so 75% of firms quote a starting price and confirm the final figure once they know your postcode. We combine starting and fixed prices for the headline, because both are what firms advertise.

Do you run a skip hire firm? You can send us your prices directly. As submissions build up, we'll add them alongside the published prices in future editions of this research.

Our earlier surveys covered boiler service prices and EICR prices. For help choosing a skip, see our skip sizes guide.
