Why kitchen costs are higher in London

Labour is the main reason. London kitchen fitters charge more because their own overheads - tools, vans, insurance, workshop space, staff - are all more expensive to run in the capital. A day rate that is reasonable in Manchester simply does not cover costs in Zone 2.

Access is a genuine factor too. Parking charges, congestion fees, and the difficulty of getting materials up stairs in Victorian terraces or into a first-floor flat in Islington all add time and cost to what would be a straightforward job outside London.

Demand stays high year-round. London has a large concentration of homeowners spending on property improvements, which means fitters are rarely short of work and have little reason to discount.

The materials themselves cost the same wherever you are. It is the fitting labour that is expensive. Buying your own units and finding a good independent kitchen fitter (rather than a design-and-fit showroom) is the most reliable way to reduce the total cost in London. How to get your London kitchen for less

Labour is expensive in London and there is not much you can do about that. But there are ways to keep the overall bill reasonable.

Buy units yourself - do not use a design-and-fit showroom

A showroom package bundles design, supply, and fitting into one price, and the margin on materials is where they make most of their money. Buying flat-pack units from IKEA Wembley or B&Q and paying an independent fitter directly is typically 30–50% cheaper. Your fitter can also buy trade units from Howdens on your behalf.

Keep the layout where it is

Moving your sink, hob, or drainage in a London flat or terrace often means cutting into concrete floors or rerouting waste through difficult routes. That adds significant cost and time. Fitting everything in the same positions as the old kitchen is usually the most straightforward job for any fitter.

Get at least three quotes from local independents

Fitter prices vary more in London than almost anywhere else. A sole trader working out of South London might quote you £2,000 less than a company with a showroom in Chelsea for the same job. Ask each one to quote on the same spec so you are comparing like for like.

Time it for January or February

London kitchen fitters slow down after Christmas just like everywhere else. January and February are the easiest months to get availability, and some fitters will negotiate on price to fill the diary. It also lines up with the post-Christmas IKEA and kitchen showroom sales.

Replace the doors, not the whole kitchen

If your existing carcasses are solid and there is no water damage, new doors, drawer fronts, and a new worktop can transform the kitchen for a fraction of the cost. Several companies deliver replacement doors nationwide, and a good carpenter can swap them out in a day or two.
