How Much Does an LPG Boiler Cost in 2026?

An LPG boiler replacement costs £1,800 to £3,500 fully installed. With a new tank as well, expect to pay £3,000 to £5,500. LPG is the go-to for off-grid properties where mains gas is not available. It works much like a regular gas boiler, just with a tank in the garden instead of a pipe from the street.

What Affects the Cost of an LPG Boiler?

Boiler type and output

LPG boilers come in combi, system, and heat-only setups, same as mains gas. Combis are the most popular for smaller homes because they heat water on demand with no cylinder. Larger homes with multiple bathrooms usually need a system boiler with a hot water cylinder. Higher kW output means a higher price.

Tank: rent or buy?

One of the biggest decisions with LPG. Renting a tank from Calor, Flogas, or similar is free or cheap upfront, but it ties you to buying fuel from that one supplier. The catch: if fuel prices jump, you have nowhere to go. Buying your own tank (£1,500 to £3,000) gives you the freedom to shop around and switch supplier whenever you like.

Above-ground vs underground tank

Above-ground tanks are cheaper (£1,200 to £2,000) and easier to access for maintenance. Underground tanks cost more (£2,500 to £3,500 installed) but keep your garden looking tidy. Worth knowing: planning rules require tanks to be a set distance from buildings and boundaries, which can limit where yours goes.

Location and access

LPG is most common in rural off-grid areas. Labour rates vary across the country, and remote locations can attract higher delivery charges for both the boiler and the gas. Engineers in the South East typically charge more than those in the North or Wales.

Flue route and positioning

A standard balanced flue through an external wall adds nothing to the base price. If the boiler needs relocating, or the flue route is longer or more complex, expect to add £150 to £500. LPG flue regulations are slightly different from mains gas, so your engineer needs to check the specific terminal positions.

Switching from another fuel

If you are switching from oil, electric, or solid fuel to LPG, the installation is more involved. You will need a new LPG tank, gas supply lines to the property, and potentially a new flue system. First-time LPG installations typically cost £3,500 to £5,500 including the tank.

LPG Boiler Running Costs

LPG is one of the pricier heating fuels, sitting above both oil and mains gas. Modern LPG boilers are 90 to 92% efficient, which helps, but there is no getting around it: LPG fuel costs more per unit than the alternatives.

Heating oil

LPG

~£1,700/year for the same house

LPG costs roughly 10 to 12p per kWh

That puts annual heating costs for a typical 3-bedroom home at £1,400 to £2,000, depending on how well insulated your home is and how much heating you use. If you own your tank and can shop around for suppliers, you will generally pay less than if you are locked into a rental agreement with a single supplier.

Why LPG costs more than oil

LPG at 10 to 12p per kWh is noticeably more expensive than heating oil at 5 to 6p per kWh. The tradeoff: LPG boilers are cheaper to buy and install, produce less carbon, and do not have the smell or spill risk that comes with oil. For plenty of people, that convenience is worth the extra running cost.

Tip: If you own your LPG tank, get fuel quotes from at least three suppliers before each delivery. Prices can vary by 10 to 15p per litre between suppliers, which adds up to hundreds of pounds over a year. Bulk buying (filling the tank when it is still a quarter full rather than waiting until it is nearly empty) also helps you avoid premium delivery charges.

LPG Boiler Prices by Region

Installation costs vary across the UK. In practice, rural areas with lots of off-grid properties tend to have more LPG-qualified engineers and keener pricing, while urban areas where LPG work is less common can be pricier.

How to Get Your LPG Boiler for Less

LPG heating is not cheap. But a few smart moves can save you hundreds on the installation and thousands over the boiler's lifetime.

Buy your own LPG tank

The catch with LPG tank rental is that you are tied to one supplier and cannot shop around for fuel. Buying your own tank (£1,500 to £3,000) means you can get quotes from any LPG supplier. If you plan to stay in the property for more than three or four years, the freedom to switch suppliers usually pays for the tank several times over.

Get at least three quotes

LPG boiler prices can vary by £500 or more between Gas Safe engineers in the same area. Always compare at least three quotes, and make sure each one separates the cost of the boiler, tank work, labour, and any extras so you can compare like with like.

Consider switching to a heat pump

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 towards an air source heat pump, which is particularly attractive for LPG users because your running costs are already high. A heat pump could halve your annual heating bill, and the grant makes the upfront cost competitive with a new LPG boiler and tank. Worth getting quotes for both. More info at gov.uk.

Time your replacement for summer

Heating engineers are rushed off their feet from October through January. If your boiler still works but is on its way out, book the swap for spring or summer when Gas Safe engineers have more availability and are more likely to offer competitive prices.

Bundle boiler and tank together

If you need a new LPG tank as well as a boiler, getting both done at the same time saves on call-out charges and labour. Most Gas Safe engineers will offer a better deal for the combined job, and you avoid the disruption of two separate visits.

Keep up with annual servicing

An annual LPG boiler service (£80 to £130) keeps your warranty valid and catches problems before they become expensive. A well-maintained LPG boiler should last 12 to 15 years. Skipping services is a false economy that shortens the boiler's life and can void your warranty.

Thinking about switching away from LPG?

The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump. For LPG-heated homes, this is particularly worth considering because your running costs are already high. A heat pump could cut your annual heating bill roughly in half, and the grant makes the upfront cost competitive with a new LPG boiler plus tank. Worth getting quotes for both before deciding.

What to Expect: The LPG Boiler Installation Process

An LPG boiler replacement typically takes 1 to 2 days. If you need a new tank as well, allow an extra day or two. Here's how the job usually works.

  1. 1

    Site survey and tank assessment

A Gas Safe registered engineer surveys the property, checks the existing LPG tank (or plans a new one), and assesses the flue route and pipework. They confirm the boiler location meets ventilation and clearance requirements under Building Regulations Part J.

  2. 2

    LPG tank installation or inspection

If a new tank is needed, it is delivered and positioned in the garden according to UKLPG CoP 24 guidelines — at least 3 metres from the property for above-ground tanks. Existing tanks are inspected and pressure-tested. The LPG supplier handles the tank; the heating engineer handles the boiler.

  3. 3

    Old boiler removal

The existing boiler is disconnected, drained, and removed. The engineer caps off the old pipework and checks for any asbestos-containing materials in older installations.

  4. 4

    New boiler fitted and connected

The new LPG boiler is wall-mounted, connected to the heating circuits and hot water system, and the flue is installed through the external wall. The gas supply line from the tank is connected and pressure-tested for leaks.

  5. 5

    Commissioning and Gas Safe notification

The engineer fires up the boiler, sets the gas pressure to the manufacturer’s specification, runs system checks, and programmes the controls. The installation is registered on the Gas Safe Register and you receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace an LPG boiler?

An LPG combi boiler replacement costs between £1,800 and £2,800 fully installed in 2026, with a typical job averaging around £2,200. LPG system boilers are slightly more at £2,200 to £3,500. If you also need a new LPG tank, add another £1,200 to £3,000 depending on whether it goes above or below ground.

Is it cheaper to heat with LPG or oil?

Oil is generally cheaper to run than LPG. Heating oil costs around 5 to 6p per kWh, while LPG runs at 10 to 12p per kWh. For a typical 3-bedroom home, that means annual heating costs of roughly £1,200 to £1,800 on oil versus £1,400 to £2,000 on LPG. However, LPG boilers tend to be cheaper to buy and install, so the upfront saving can offset some of the running cost difference.

Should I rent or buy an LPG tank?

Buying your own LPG tank costs £1,500 to £3,000 upfront, but it means you can shop around for the cheapest gas supplier. Renting from a supplier like Calor or Flogas is free or low cost initially, but you are locked into buying fuel from that one supplier, often at higher prices. If you plan to stay in the property for more than a few years, buying your own tank usually works out cheaper in the long run.

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for LPG work?

Yes. LPG boiler installation and servicing must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the specific LPG qualification. Not all Gas Safe engineers are qualified for LPG work, so you need to check that yours has the right certification. You can verify this at the Gas Safe Register website.

Can I get a grant to replace my LPG boiler with a heat pump?

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump for properties currently heated by LPG. This makes the switch surprisingly affordable, especially since LPG running costs are relatively high. Your property must not be connected to the gas grid and the installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer.
